A leading scholar on the 16th U.S. president and the political culture of the Civil War, Mr. Holzer has written over 500 articles and reviews for various magazines and scholarly journals, and is the author, co-author or editor of nearly 50 books, most of them concerning Lincoln; he is considered to be a major contributor to our understanding of the war.

A content consultant for Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-winning 2012 film Lincoln, he has frequently appeared on History, A&E, PBS and other networks on shows including The Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, Charlie Rose, History Detectives and Bill Moyers Journal. He has also moderated a series of Lincoln-themed stage presentations around the country featuring actors such as Stephen Lang, Norm Lewis, Sam Waterston, Holly Hunter, Richard Dreyfuss, Liam Neeson and Dianne Wiest.

This past February, Mr. Holzer was chosen from among 114 nominees as the 2015 winner of the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize for his acclaimed 2014 book, Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion. He will receive the prize, awarded annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Gettysburg College for the finest scholarly work in English on Abraham Lincoln or the Civil War era, at a ceremony in April. His many other works include Exploring Lincoln; Father Abraham: Lincoln and His Sons; Hearts Touched by Fire: The Best of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War; and The Civil War in 50 Objects.

During a year in which America observes the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War as well as Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, it seems fitting that Mr. Holzer – whose recent books include President Lincoln Assassinated!!: The Firsthand Story of the Murder, Manhunt, Trial and Mourning, compiled by Holzer from more than 80 original historic documents – will speak to Tauck guests about Lincoln’s life and presidency in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania as a special guest lecturer on the September 25, 2015 departure of Tauck’s Most Hallowed Ground: The Civil War. The 11-day group travel trip takes guests for an inside look at the people, places and events of the Civil War with in-depth exploration of key sites from Washington to Richmond, and was co-crafted by filmmaker Ken Burns, creator of the landmark PBS series The Civil War – himself a past winner of the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize for that groundbreaking 1990 documentary series.
