Clothing and Packing

What to Pack and Wear

Preparing for your small ship cruise is key to a great experience aboard and ashore. We operate cruises all over the world, so naturally you'll need to pack differently for a Galápagos Islands cruise than you would for a voyage to Iceland or a cruise in the Mediterranean. You'll find useful information on weather, packing, cruise wear, etc. in the Before You Go section for every trip or cruise on our website. Then, once you've booked, you'll receive even more specific information on what to wear on a cruise in your Personal Documents. However, we've provided a general cruise packing list below with suggestions of what clothing to bring that can help you get started. But here's the bottom line: When deciding what to pack on a cruise, less is more!

Basics for Your Journey

  • Comfortable walking shoes – very important!
  • Sunglasses, hat
  • Comfortable warm-weather clothing (for temperate or tropical destinations)
  • Insulated cold-weather gear (for colder destinations like Iceland or Antarctica)
  • Swimwear, gym wear
  • Daypack for personal items & camera equipment
  • Good pair of binoculars, flashlight
  • Camera, lenses, filter
  • Battery-operated travel alarm clock
  • Windbreaker, rain poncho, collapsible umbrella
  • Zipper-lock bags
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find

Other Personal Care Items to Consider

Along with your prescription medications to last the entire journey, it may be useful to pack a personal kit with over-the-counter drugs for possible upset stomach, allergy medication, aspirin and insect repellent. Other suggestions are pre-moistened towelettes, antibacterial lotion, sunscreen, lip protection and sundries that may be difficult to find en route. Along with an optional extra pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses, and a change of clothing in the event of luggage delay, your personal kit should be packed in your carry-on bag.

Make Packing Easier

To help you decide what to include when packing for your destination, we’ve partnered with Necessary Gear, an easy-to-use one-stop shop that carries the gear and apparel that you’ll need to make the most of your journey. By and large, our cruises are very relaxed, and onboard attire is generally casual. Many guests like to dress up a bit for onboard receptions or special dinners ashore – but by all means, be comfortable!
