Tauck Supports Broadcast of New Vietnam Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick in Key PBS Markets

“The Vietnam War” is One of Three Upcoming Television Projects for Tauck

WILTON, CT (September 13, 2017)  Tauck, the guided tour and cruise company that has partnered with filmmaker Ken Burns for more than half a decade, is taking its involvement to the next level. The company has announced that it is supporting the PBS broadcast of “The Vietnam War,” the 10-part, 18-hour documentary co-directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, in 15 different markets across the U.S. Ten years in the making, the highly-anticipated film is set to premier nationally on PBS on Sunday, September 17, and Tauck is working with PBS affiliates in key markets ranging from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. Tauck will have a 15-second promotional spot airing in all 15 markets, reaching an anticipated audience of more than 35 million viewers.

Earlier this year, Tauck announced that it was expanding its Ken Burns American Journeys partnership with the filmmaker to include its two itineraries that feature Vietnam; the 16-day “Indochina: Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos” and “Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand” (also 16 days).  Beginning in 2018, both of the Tauck itineraries will feature several “Stories by Ken Burns” filmed vignettes.  These short (10 – 15 minute) exclusive-to-Tauck films will be viewed by Tauck guests during the Vietnam portion of their itineraries, and they will feature insights and perspectives provided by Burns, Novick and producer Sarah Botstein.

Among other topics, the vignettes explore the shared humanity of American and Vietnamese combatants and families, how media coverage shaped the course of the conflict, and some of the powerful mythologies surrounding the war.  Tauck is producing between eight and ten of the vignettes for use on the Southeast Asia tours.

Tauck also announced in March that it had renewed its partnership with Burns for an additional five years.  In addition to working with Tauck on the vignettes, Burns has also worked closely with the company to craft new itineraries that explore the themes of his films.  In addition, Burns and Tauck have operated a series of themed, single-departure, five-day events in Washington, DC, New Orleans, Chicago, New York and elsewhere at which Burns delivers the keynote address and spends time with Tauck guests afterwards during a meet-and-greet reception.

In addition to its involvement in the new Vietnam film, Tauck has also been involved this summer in two other television productions.  In June, Tauck lent its expertise to the filming of two episodes of the new TV program “The Yellow Roads of Europe” in Italy.  Produced by the team behind the popular “Music Voyager” television travel series, “The Yellow Roads of Europe” will air globally in more than 100 countries and on over 250 television stations in the U.S., including a number of PBS stations.  In the two episodes filmed in June, the show’s host joins Tauck guests for special “insider” experiences in Rome, Umbria, Tuscany and Florence.  Both episodes are scheduled to air later this year.

In July, Tauck hosted a camera crew from the television show “Dream Cruises” aboard its ms Joy riverboat as the ship sailed on the company’s 12-day “Danube Reflections” itinerary.  An hour-long episode of “Dream Cruises” highlighting the journey and the ms Joy will air nationally in the U.S. and Canada next spring.
