Tauck and Google Maps Team Up to Capture “Street View” Panoramas on the Danube

360-Degree Images Along Lower River Now Viewable Online

NORWALK, CT (April 9, 2015)  Since the 2007 launch of its Street View project to catalog 360-degree panoramic images from locations around the world, the team at Google has driven more than seven million miles, visited 66 countries and traveled to both Antarctica and the Arctic.  And now with the help of Tauck River Cruising, the company has recently added the lower Danube River – and images captured inside Tauck’s ms Treasures riverboat – to the portfolio of global locations it has digitally chronicled.

Tauck and Google Maps joined forces last summer, when Google technicians worked with Tauck and its maritime partner Scylla AG to mount one of Google’s “Trekker” cameras to the forward deck of Tauck’s ms Treasures riverboat.  Over the following days, the Trekker captured imagery of the river across Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. The Trekker creates a 360-degree panoramic view with the help of 15 lenses, each pointed in a different direction.  The views captured by the different lenses are then digitally “stitched” together, resulting in the full panorama.  Viewers can change their viewpoint, looking up, down, left and right, by moving their computer mouse.

Areas captured by the Street View Trekker camera during its time aboard the ms Treasures include imagery spanning six countries from Bratislava, Slovakia to Cernavoda, Romania.  Highlights include Bratislava Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Chain Bridge and Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest, Hungary, and the Franciscan Monastery and Church of St. Philip in the Croatian city of Vukovar.  The Trekker also captured 360-degree views of the ms Treasures’ Compass Rose dining room, Panorama Lounge, Sun Deck and other areas.  All of the Trekker images from aboard the ms Treasures were just recently uploaded to the collection of Street View panoramas on the Google website.

“Google is a true innovator and an undisputed leader in their field, and we like to think of ourselves in similar terms,” said Tauck CEO Dan Mahar.  “We’re both continually pushing the boundaries in our respective industries, and it was great working with Google to chronicle Europe’s most iconic river – a place where Tauck has already brought great innovation.”

Tauck has been named the “World’s Best River Cruise Line” by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine in three of the past four years.  Last year the company launched two new riverboats, the ms Inspire and ms Savor, which received widespread acclaim for the innovative Loft Cabin design featured on selected lower-deck cabins of both vessels.  The ms Savor sails on several Tauck itineraries along the Danube, which ranks among the most popular rivers with the company’s guests.

Street View in Google Maps makes imagery available from every continent and includes underwater imagery, theme parks, university campuses, pedestrian malls, popular landmarks, zoos and more.  Tens of millions of Street View images are currently available to the more than one billion active users of Google Maps services each month.
