Tauck Christens New ms Joy Riverboat in Germany

Twenty-two 300-Square-Foot Suites Highlight Tauck’s Newest 135-Meter Ship

WILTON, CT (June 23, 2016)  Tauck family members, company executives, travel agents and special guests gathered in Straubing, Germany, yesterday to welcome the new ms Joy into Tauck’s fleet of European riverboats.  The christening ceremony along the Danube River marked the launch of Tauck’s second new ship this year, following the christening of the ms Grace in April.

Serving as godmothers for the ms Joy were three longtime Tauck employees, Jacque Moran, Mary Murrin and Kristin Robinson.  All three initially joined the company to serve as tour directors, or “Tauck Directors,” before being promoted to management positions within the organization.  According to the company, their selection as godmothers is a tribute to the critical role Tauck Directors play in delivering Tauck’s travel experiences around the world, and in maintaining the company’s longstanding reputation for unparalleled service.  Together, the three godmothers share 18 years of combined Tauck Director and Tauck Cruise Director experience, as well as 35 years of combined tenure at Tauck.

Like the other ships in Tauck’s fleet, the ms Joy will carry far fewer passengers – yet it will have far more service staff – than ships of the same size operated by other river cruise lines.  Where the ms Joy will carry just 130 guests, other lines’ ships of the same length carry 190 passengers, or 46% more guests.  And where other lines have just one cruise director to tend to the needs of those 190 guests, the ms Joy will have a Tauck Cruise Director and three professional Tauck Directors to care for 130 guests.

Like Tauck’s three other 135-meter ships, the ms Joy is also notable for its twenty-two 300-square-foot suites; the most suites of that size on any European riverboat.  Each is furnished with two French balconies with floor-to-ceiling windows, a pull-out couch, roomy walk-in closet, and spacious marble bathroom.  Along with the suites, the ms Joy also has thirty-two 225-square-foot cabins, plus an additional thirteen cabins ranging from 150 to 190 square feet.  All suites and cabins feature in-room movies, minibar, luxury toiletries, and plush bedding with 100% goose down pillows, 400-thread-count linens and pillow-top mattresses.

Of the ms Joy’s 225-square-foot staterooms, eight are Tauck’s unique “loft cabins” positioned on the vessel’s lower (Emerald) deck.  On other European riverboats the lower-level cabins are small, and because they’re mostly below the ships’ waterlines, they’re limited to modest, sealed windows at eye level that admit minimal sunlight and zero fresh air.  Tauck’s 225-square-foot loft cabins, however, have a raised platform seating area located against the ship’s hull/outer wall with a correspondingly higher ceiling immediately above.  The higher ceiling in turn allows the use of a much taller window than can normally be incorporated into lower-level cabins.  The middle portion of this window can be opened electronically for fresh air, and being taller, the window allows far more natural light to fill the cabin.

Also featured on the ms Joy is a second dining venue, Arthur’s (named for company chairman Arthur Tauck Jr.) which serves as a more casual option to the fine dining in the ship’s main Compass Rose dining room.  In addition, the ship features a scenic Panorama Lounge offering musical performances and other entertainment, a fitness room, massage studio and hair salon, and an open-air Sun Deck with a putting green, plunge pool and generous seating from which to enjoy views of the passing countryside.

Following the conclusion of its inaugural cruise, the ms Joy will sail this year on Tauck itineraries along the Danube including “The Blue Danube,” “Musical Magic Along the Blue Danube,” and “Christmas Markets Along the Danube.”  In 2017, the ms Joy will also host family groups as it sails on the eight-day Tauck Bridges itinerary, “Blue Danube: Family Riverboat Adventure.”

The Tauck Bridges cruise along the Danube is one of the company’s four river itineraries designed specifically for families, with the others sailing along the Rhone, the Rhine and – new for 2017 – the Seine.  For the coming year, Tauck is doubling the number of its family river cruise departures from 10 to 20, and that increase is one of the reasons behind the company’s recent expansion of its fleet of European riverboats.  The christening of the ms Joy comes just two months after Tauck welcomed another new 135-meter ship, the ms Grace, into its fleet of European riverboats.  The launch of the ms Grace and ms Joy completes a two-year expansion that more than doubled the size of Tauck’s fleet, from four vessels in 2014 to nine.
