Tauck Adds First-Ever Overseas Trips to Ken Burns Partnership

Two Itineraries Featuring Vietnam to be Enhanced; New 10-Part Burns Documentary on Vietnam War Set for September Premiere

WILTON, CT (July 18, 2017) Tauck and Ken Burns have announced their first-ever collaboration on some of Tauck’s overseas itineraries, with the filmmaker and his co-director Lynn Novick, along with producer Sarah Botstein, set to enhance a pair of trips exploring Vietnam. The announcement comes as Burns and Novick are preparing to premier “The Vietnam War,” their highly anticipated, ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, scheduled to air on PBS this September.

The two Tauck itineraries being enhanced through the company’s partnership with Burns are its 16-day “Indochina: Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos” and the 16-day “Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand” tours. Beginning in 2018, both journeys will feature a number of “Stories by Ken Burns” filmed vignettes. These short (10 – 15 minute) exclusive-to-Tauck documentary films will be viewed by Tauck guests during the Vietnam portion of their itineraries, and they will feature insights and perspectives provided by Burns, Novick and Botstein.

Director/producer Lynn Novick has been making award-winning documentaries for nearly 30 years. She has collaborated with Burns on many films exploring American history and culture, including “Frank Lloyd Wright,” “Prohibition,” “The Tenth Inning,” and “The War, ” “Jazz” and “Baseball.” Sarah Botstein has produced films with Burns and Novick since 1997, including “The Vietnam War,” “Prohibition,” “The War” and “Jazz.” Along with interviews and voiceovers with the three filmmakers, Tauck’s vignettes will include Vietnam War-era footage and still photos culled from the vast collections of the National Archives.

Among other topics, the vignettes explore how cultural and political divides exposed by the Vietnam War continue to echo in America today, how the changing media landscape of the 1960s and early 1970s shaped the course of the conflict, and the origins and consequences of the powerful mythologies surrounding the war. Tauck is set to produce between eight and ten of the vignettes for use on its Southeast Asia tours. The company has already produced over 130 vignettes with Burns that cover an incredible range of topics, with those existing vignettes currently featured on nearly two dozen Tauck tours across the

Tauck’s two Southeast Asia tours are part of its recently announced 2018 “Exotics” collection of 28 journeys in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia/New Zealand. The portfolio includes safaris in Africa and Northern India, small ship ocean cruises, and Tauck Bridges itineraries designed specifically for families. In addition, Tauck’s safaris, selected cruises and other trips exploring the wonders of the natural world are offered in partnership with the award-winning filmmakers at BBC Earth, with exclusive content enhancing the experiences of Tauck guests.

Tauck’s unveiling of its 2018 Exotics itineraries comes amid a period of robust growth, with year-over-year bookings showing double digit gains, percentage-wise, throughout the portfolio. Tauck’s Exotics journeys are uniquely important to the company and its travel agents, appealing both to longtime Tauck guests (who may have already explored destinations in the U.S. and Europe with the company) and first-time Tauck travelers who might normally travel independently, but welcome the assurance of guided group travel in unfamiliar destinations lying further afield.
