Tauck Adds Portugal Itinerary to its Popular “A Week In…” Collection of European Tours

Nearly 40 European Tours on Tap For 2017, Including 12 “A Week In…” Trips

WILTON, CT (October 4, 2016)  Tauck is adding a new exploration of Portugal to its popular “A Week In…” series of eight-day European land tours for 2017.  In all, the company will operate a dozen “A Week In…” itineraries in the coming year, plus a much larger number of other European  land tours of longer duration.

The new “A Week In… Portugal” itinerary (from $3,590 per person, plus airfare) travels from Porto to Lisbon, visiting no fewer than seven UNESCO World Heritage Site plus wineries and wine cellars, historic monasteries and churches, and palaces and castles along the way.  During their time in Porto, Tauck’s guests will enjoy a two-night stay at the Freixo Palace Hotel, a restored 18th-century rococo palace.  They’ll also explore the city’s historic center, and learn about the region’s rich wine-making culture as they tour the Douro River Valley and sample local vintages during tastings at a vineyard and wine cellar.

Traveling south, the itinerary next visits Coimbra and the eponymous 700-year-old university located there, as well as a historic 13th-century monastery in Alcobaça, before reaching Monte Real.  There, guests will overnight at the Palace Hotel Monte Real and enjoy an exclusive performance of Portugal’s traditional “fado” music.

The following day, guests head southeasterly to Tomar (where they’ll visit the hilltop monastery, Convento de Cristo, built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century) before arriving in Évora for a two-night stay at the Convento do Espinheiro.  With Évora as a base, guests will travel to the outlying Alentejo wine country to visit the Herdade do Esporao winery for a tour, tasting and lunch.  En route back to Évora, guests will learn about the region’s other agricultural traditions during a visit to Olivais do Sul, an award-winning producer of artisanal olive oils.

Tauck’s eight-day exploration of Portugal concludes with two nights at the InterContinental in Lisbon, where they’ll tour the 500-year-old Jerónimos Monastery, visit a museum celebrating Portugal’s iconic painted ceramic “azulejo” tiles, and enjoy a Tauck-exclusive private tour and dinner at Palacio de Queluz, a lavish 18th-century royal retreat.  The following day they’ll travel outside the city to the coastal resort town of Cascais and the picturesque village of Sintra, before returning to Lisbon for a farewell reception and dinner.

Tauck has scheduled 11 departures of “A Week In… Portugal” to operate from May through October of the coming year, when the new Portugal tour will be joined by another new journey, “A Week In… Tuscany & Umbria,” to bring the total number of “A Week In…” itineraries to 12.  Tauck is also adding a third new land journey in Europe for 2017, the 13-day “Adriatic Treasures: Croatia to Venice.”

The company’s complete collection of nearly 40 European land journeys, along with a selection of its popular European river cruises, are all featured in a new 156-page full-color brochure that has been mailing to travel agents and past and prospective Tauck guests in recent weeks.  Those interested in more information can contact their local travel professional, call Tauck at 800 468 2825, or visit the company’s website at www.tauck.com.
