Ken Burns Hosts, Narrates New History of Tauck Video

New “Tauck: An American Story” Video Celebrates the Birth and Evolution of America’s First Licensed Tour Operator

NORWALK, CT (May 14, 2015)  As Tauck continues to celebrate the 90th anniversary of its founding, the company is sharing the story of its origins and evolution in a new video featuring America’s premier documentary filmmaker, Ken Burns.  Burns hosts the new ten-minute “Tauck: An American Story” video and provides its narration, recounting how Arthur Tauck Sr., then a young traveling salesman, brought six paying guests along on an 1,100 mile sales trip through New England and southeastern Canada in 1925.  The video goes on to highlight key moments over Tauck’s nine decades, from becoming America’s first licensed “tour broker” in 1935 to the global diversification of the company’s offerings, to its strong presence at the forefront of European river cruising today.

“We were absolutely thrilled when Ken agreed to work with us on the new video,” said Tauck CEO Dan Mahar.  “Tauck’s story is uniquely American, and who better to help us communicate the events of our founding and evolution than Ken Burns, ‘America’s storyteller’?  Ken has enjoyed an incredible career bringing American history and culture to life through his films,” continued Mahar, “and his eagerness to help us tell the Tauck story is truly humbling.”  The new Tauck video can be viewed on the company’s website at

Tauck and Burns already enjoy a close professional relationship, having partnered together since 2010 on Ken Burns American Journeys, a portfolio of unique travel experiences that explore the themes of Burns’s films ranging from The Civil War and Baseball to The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, Jazz and The Roosevelts: An Intimate History

The Ken Burns American Journeys partnership is comprised of three components, including special single-departure, multi-day Ken Burns Events at which Burns himself delivers a keynote address and participates in a meet-and-greet reception with attendees.  Past events have explored the history and culture of baseball, the origins and evolution of jazz, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prohibition Era in Chicago, and the American Civil War.

A second component, Crafted By Tauck & Ken Burns itineraries, are domestic tours designed in close cooperation with Burns and his longtime collaborator Dayton Duncan.  (Unlike the “one-off” Ken Burns Events, the Crafted By itineraries are offered throughout the season and don’t include a personal appearance by Burns.)  The third component is a collection of 100+ Stories By Ken Burns filmed narratives featuring the personal insights and commentary of Burns and Duncan.  Stories By Ken Burns films are typically viewed by Tauck guests en route to places highlighted in the films, adding depth and perspective to guests’ experiences as they visit those locations.
