Award-Winning Lincoln Scholar Harold Holzer to Address Tauck Guests in Gettysburg

Presentation to Note 150th Anniversary of Lincoln’s Assassination

NORWALK, CT (April 30, 2015)  With the world marking the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination this spring, Tauck has announced that noted Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer will address guests on a special departure of its “Most Hallowed Ground” Civil War tour in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, next September.  Holzer has authored, co-authored and edited 49 books devoted mostly to Lincoln, and he is the 2015 winner of the $50,000 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize for outstanding scholarship on the 16th president.  Holzer also served as a consultant to the critically-acclaimed Steven Spielberg film “Lincoln.”

Holzer will speak to Tauck guests about the 16th president’s life and legacy during the September 25th departure of the company’s “Most Hallowed Ground” Civil War tour.  Holzer will address the Tauck group in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where on November 19, 1863, Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address.  Holzer’s presentation will occur on September 28th, shortly before the 152nd anniversary of Lincoln’s iconic speech, and shortly after the broadcast debut (September 7 – 11 on PBS) of a newly restored, high-definition version of Ken Burns’s ground-breaking film, The Civil War.

“With the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s death occurring this year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on one of the most seminal figures in American history,” said Tauck CEO Dan Mahar.  “There is no one more qualified to lead that discussion and to provide insights into Lincoln than Harold Holzer, and we’re thrilled that he’ll be speaking to our guests in Gettysburg this fall.  At Tauck our mission is to provide travelers with enriching, inspiring experiences they can’t arrange on their own,” Mahar continued, “and learning about Lincoln from such a renowned expert – and in the anniversary year of his death – is just the kind of ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ moment that we’re proud to offer our guests.”

In addition to his work on 49 books, Holzer has also written more than 500 articles and reviews for various magazines and scholarly journals.  In February he was chosen from 114 nominees to win the 2015 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize for his 2014 book “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion.”  Past Lincoln Prize winners have included Doris Kearns Goodwin for her book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln,” and the filmmaker Ken Burns for his documentary “The Civil War.”

TAUCK’S “MOST HALLOWED GROUND” CIVIL WAR TOUR
Holzer’s presentation will take place on Day 4 of the September 25th departure of Tauck’s “Most Hallowed Ground” tour, which was co-designed by Tauck in cooperation with Ken Burns.  Burns’s film “The Civil War” remains the highest rated and the most celebrated documentary in PBS history.  The 11-day itinerary begins with a three-night stay at the historic Willard hotel in Washington, DC, where Tauck guests will enjoy exclusive early-admission into the National Archives and visits to other Civil War-related sites in the city.

Guests will also travel to the site of abolitionist John Brown’s failed raid at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, as well as Antietam National Battlefield and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Maryland.  In Virginia, guests will explore the roots of the Civil War during visits to the homes of founding fathers Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and they’ll learn about the conflict’s toll at Appomattox Court House, Petersburg and Richmond.  Along the way, guests’ understanding of the Civil War will be enhanced by a series of exclusive filmed vignettes in which Ken Burns shares his personal perspectives on people, events and themes that shaped and were shaped by “the war between the states.”

Included in the tour price (from $5,290 per person, double occupancy, plus air) are all accommodations, ground transportation including airport transfers, all sightseeing and admission to all attractions, most meals and gratuities, luggage handling, and much more.  Those interested in learning more may see their local travel agent, visit www.tauck.com, or call 1 800 468 2825.
